About

I am a Professor of Geological Oceanography at San José State University and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. My research integrates marine geology, sedimentology, geochemistry, and seafloor mapping to investigate Earth surface processes across coastal, marine, and deep-sea environments.

Current research focuses on the environmental impacts of the January 2025 Moss Landing lithium-ion battery fire through the EMBER (Estuary Monitoring of Battery Emissions and Residues) initiative. Other research interests include Monterey Canyon morphodynamics, silica diagenesis in hydrothermal sedimentary systems, coastal sediment transport, and environmental geochemistry.

I combine field observations, laboratory analyses, remote sensing, GIS, and quantitative methods to study geological processes and their environmental implications. My work has been published in leading scientific journals and has been featured by national and international media.
